she lives so that she can change her face

so that she can say that no part of you

has ever belonged to her

by the time she dies

*

but she doesn’t know your face

like I do

*

she has the man who fled

for his life

on her face

*

he holds on to her face

*

the features that almost got him killed

*

holds on to it from another country

presumed alive

*

my father’s face lives in a different place

*

her face, foreign matter

escape artist

sends it back to where it never came from
