to help a living soul | a mental health poem

by doing nothing, you’re doing something

you’re contributing to the pain

you’re complicit in the lies and the silence

and you mean well and mean well

peace is not reached by leaning back

and shouting my hands are clean

I’ll wait it out, I don’t know, I can’t tell

peace is not reached when what you do

is thinking only about yourself in a moment of crisis

when your character and integrity are tested

and you muted yourself and waited for a better deal

peace is not reached when what you don’t do

harms others directly or indirectly

your voice is stuck in cowardly comfort zones

fearful and barely existent

what do you care about

why didn’t you tell me

why didn’t you tell me

no, I say to you tell me what you would have done

decency and courage seem a waste of time to too many people

but then they all show up when tragedy occurs

save it

save me from your poor souls

save me from your state of minds

your spinelessness and lack of solidarity

I could splash your face with my blood

and you’d still ask yourself how much would the right thing cost me

if you can’t fight for yourself

you can’t fight for others
