the light didn’t shine through her cracks | a poem

you tried to save me

by pretending that everything was all right

*

I heard the crevices crack in your heart

*

observed the smiles distorted by avalanches of swallowed suffering

*

you held me in love

but I could feel the tension in your body

*

how you scratched and peeled off your own skin

because you were too afraid

too deeply fragile

to avenge yourself

*

and women attacked themselves

to do s o m e t h i n g
